The best time of the year to go to Puerto Madryn

9 September 2026

What is the best time to see whales? Between September and November is the perfect time to see whales, penguins, orcas, dolphins, sea lions, elephant seals, and toninas, besides taking advantage of the mild spring weather.

The national diving capital of Argentina, Puerto Madryn (Chubut, Patagonia) is one of the best places in the world to enjoy the extraordinary experience of swimming and snorkeling with sea lions and seeing giant whales (of the Franca Austral species) from the city's coast or on boat excursions that get within a few meters of them.

It is also possible to walk among penguins (of the Magallanes species) in colonies (Punta Tombo, to the south, and Reserva San Lorenzo, to the north) where thousands of specimens gather, observe orcas at Punta Norte in their famous maneuver to hunt sea lions on the beach, and spot toninas overas (black and white dolphins) and flamingos.

Puerto Madryn in spring combines the immensity of the Patagonian steppe, a marine fauna unique in the world, and the hospitality of a city ready to welcome visitors. Whether sailing alongside whales, exploring its ancient landscapes, or enjoying its excellent gastronomy, this corner of the Argentine south promises an unforgettable trip.

In addition, Península Valdés (a hundred kilometers from the city) was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1999, due to its extraordinary biological and ecological importance for the conservation of marine mammals and birds. A giant nature reserve with steppe landscapes and cliffs, it is an ideal place to disconnect and take incredible photos to upload to social media.

How to get to Puerto Madryn?

To fly to the city, there are two possibilities: the local airport (10 kilometers from the city) and the Trelew airport, 60 kilometers away. The difference between the two is that the latter has a higher frequency of flights and bridges the distance using door-to-door shuttle services (combis) to Puerto Madryn. To go from Puerto Madryn to Península Valdés, you can travel by car, book an excursion, or use public transportation.

Where to stay in Puerto Madryn?

  • El Centro and la Costanera (Downtown and Waterfront): Close to everything. Ideal for those traveling to Puerto Madryn for the first time without a car. It allows you to be just a few steps from the beach, the promenade (perfect for walks with gulf views), and the vast majority of restaurants, chocolate shops, and tourism agencies that pick up tourists at their hotel for excursions to Península Valdés or Punta Tombo.
  • Zona Sur (South Zone): Tranquility and panoramic views. As you move away to the south along Boulevard Brown, the pace becomes much calmer and more residential. It is ideal for resting, with less crowded beaches and higher-category hotels with open sea views. A good alternative for couples seeking romance or families preferring peace.
  • Puerto Pirámides: For lovers of pure nature. Although technically a small ecological village located inside Península Valdés, many travelers choose to spend a few nights there. It is the only point from where whale-watching boat trips depart. Sleeping here allows you to enjoy magical sunsets and the pace of a seaside town surrounded by cliffs.

How many days should you dedicate to Puerto Madryn?

A good plan involves dedicating three to four full days, to see its main attractions without rushing.

  • Day one: Península Valdés and Puerto Pirámides. A full day to tour the peninsula, go whale watching, and visit points like Punta Norte or Caleta Valdés.
  • Day two: Punta Tombo and Rawson. Travel to the largest Magellanic penguin reserve in the region and add a boat trip in Playa Unión (Rawson) to see toninas overas.
  • Day three: Local beaches and El Doradillo. Tour the nearby rookeries, visit El Doradillo to see whales from the coast, and enjoy the city.
  • Day four: Adventure activities. An extra day to do the traditional scuba diving baptism, snorkel with sea lions, or visit the historic Welsh cities of Gaiman and Trelew.

What to eat in Puerto Madryn?

Seafood and fish (prawns, fried calamari / rabas, pollack, scallops, and Patagonian octopus) and Patagonian lamb (prepared roasted on a spit / al asador or in stews). Near Puerto Madryn, there are other cities like Gaiman, Rawson, and Trelew, where the Welsh community built their settlements when they arrived in this area 150 years ago. Gaiman's tea houses are famous for their authentic tea accompanied by their typical Welsh black cake.

What should you keep in mind when traveling to Puerto Madryn in spring?

It is highly advisable to wear warm clothing in layers, because the Patagonian wind on the boats or on the coast always surprises with cold, even in spring.
