Argentina Offers Significant VAT Refunds for Foreign Tourists
The measure applies to foreign tourists and includes refunds on accommodation services and purchases of domestic products to encourage tourism.
As part of policies aimed at promoting inbound tourism, Argentina offers tax benefits for visitors from abroad who choose the country as their destination. Foreign tourists will be able to access two high-impact benefits: an automatic 21% discount on accommodation and the possibility of claiming a VAT refund on purchases of domestic products.
These measures seek to make tourists’ stays more affordable, strengthening the destination’s competitiveness and promoting consumption in local businesses and services.
Automatic Discount on Accommodation Services
Non-resident foreign tourists are entitled to a 21% bonus corresponding to VAT on accommodation services throughout the country. The benefit also includes breakfast when it is included in the rate.
To qualify, it is necessary to present a passport or foreign identity document, along with the entry certificate issued by the National Migration Directorate. In addition, payment must be made with a credit or debit card issued abroad or via an international currency transfer.
The discount is applied directly and automatically at the time of billing, without the need for additional procedures.
The measure covers hotels, inns, apart-hotels, boarding houses, motels, campsites, and other establishments registered with ARCA (formerly AFIP) as registered taxpayers.
VAT Refund on Purchases of Domestic Products
Foreign visitors may also request a VAT refund on purchases of domestically produced goods at stores affiliated with Tax Free and/or Global Blue.
The process requires presenting a passport or foreign identity document, the entry certificate, and type B invoices, along with the refund cheque issued by the store. The refund validation is completed upon leaving the country, through authorised points at airports and terminals, or via special drop boxes.
The refund can be received in cash, credited to a credit card, or sent via bank cheque.
These policies are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at facilitating the arrival and stay of international tourists, promoting a more attractive and accessible environment for those who choose to discover Argentina.
