Argentina offers significant economic incentives for foreign tourists
The measure applies to foreign tourists and includes a 21% VAT refund on accommodation services and tax-free shopping on national products, aimed at boosting tourism.
As part of its policies to promote inbound tourism, Argentina offers tax benefits to international visitors who choose the country as their destination. Foreign tourists can access two high-impact incentives: an automatic 21% VAT discount on accommodation and the possibility of requesting a tax-free refund on purchases of national products.
These measures aim to make stays more affordable for tourists, enhance the destination's competitiveness, and encourage spending at local shops and service providers.
Automatic discount on accommodation services
Non-resident foreign tourists are entitled to a 21% VAT discount on accommodation services throughout the country. The benefit also includes breakfast, provided it is included in the rate.
To access this benefit, tourists must present their passport or foreign ID along with the entry receipt issued by the National Directorate of Migration. Additionally, payment must be made using a credit or debit card issued abroad or via an international currency transfer.
The discount is applied directly and automatically at the time of billing, with no need for additional paperwork.
The measure applies to hotels, inns, apart-hotels, guesthouses, motels, campsites, and other establishments registered with ARCA (formerly AFIP) as VAT-registered entities.
Tax-free shopping on national products
Likewise, foreign visitors may request a tax-free refund on purchases of products made in Argentina from stores affiliated with Global Blue.
The procedure requires presenting a passport or foreign ID, the entry receipt, and type B invoices, along with the refund cheque issued by the retailer. Refund validation is completed upon exiting the country through authorised points at airports and terminals, or via special drop boxes.
The refund can be collected in cash, credited to a credit card, or issued via bank cheque.
These policies are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at facilitating the arrival and stay of international tourists, promoting a more attractive and accessible environment for those who choose to discover Argentina.
