This German Couple Travelled around Argentina in a Motor Home for Nearly a Year
Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Puerto Madryn, Salta, Jujuy, and Catamarca were part of their tour on four-wheels. With the caravan Klaus, an electrical engineer, built and brought in a ship from their home country, they covered Argentina from north to south.
Klaus is 65 years old, and Christine, 62. Both were born in Germany and share, among other things, a passion for travelling and seeing the world. He is an electrical engineer and built the caravan that was their mobile home in Argentina for nine months. They had already been to the United States, Australia, Indonesia, Africa and Europe, among others, and as good globetrotters, they could not leave the country with the End of the World out.
They arrived in Argentina in October 2018 and left the country in February 2022 —with a break in between since the pandemic forced them to return to their homeland. For them, the most beautiful thing about travelling is visiting new places with freedom, and our vast territory was immediately nominated as an ideal place for their desire. Four wheels and a new culture to discover: this was the couple’s journey across the country of mate and asado.
Why Did You Choose Argentina for Your Trip?
We hadn’t visited South America before, and the diversity of Argentinian landscapes caught our attention: deserts, high mountains, rivers, roads that climb up to 5,000 metres, swamps, and seas. We were interested in travelling around quieter places away from the crowds. Also, the people and the culture sparked an interest —the carnivals, the celebrations, the meat (especially the strip loin steaks), and the craft beer.
What Are the Advantages of Travelling around Argentina in Motor Home?
It is a great country with many possibilities and a vast open space for enjoying nature. Its routes have easy accessibility to discover the unmissable spots of each destination, which are spectacular.
Which Were Your Favourite Experiences in the Country?
I loved meeting its people: Argentinians are very open-minded. They are proud of their country, and everyone welcomed us very well. We have met hospitable and friendly people, who were always willing to help us. Everyone was interested in us and our history, constantly asking us about Germany, the motor home, and the trip we were making.
Top Five of Your Favourite Places
These are only five, but we got to visit many more places, and we loved them as well:
1. The Puna: It extends from Jujuy to the north of San Juan, and it is the second-highest plateau on Earth. The highest point we reached with our caravan was 4,900 metres.
2. The Perito Moreno Glacier: Located in Santa Cruz, it is one of the planet’s most important glaciers, and the ice calving is a unique natural spectacle.
3. Salta, with its different multicoloured mountains, vegetation, and delicious wine route.
4. The Argentinian coast and its fauna: We saw sea lions, penguins, and other very friendly animals.
5. The Atuel canyon in the city of San Rafael, Mendoza: A mix between adventure and superb landscapes.
What Did You Learn about Argentinians?
After spending several months, apart from discovering that you were very friendly, we understood the importance of family here. We believe that what keeps the country together is the sense of family. It is something very essential in Argentina, and we haven’t seen that elsewhere in the world.
