September Getaways in Argentina

14 August 2026

The arrival of September marks the awakening of spring in Argentina, a perfect time to take a break and treat yourself to a few days traveling through some of the wonderful destinations in its vast territory.

Whether it’s to be fascinated by the marine fauna in Patagonia, to delve into the green magic of the northern yungas (jungles), or to combine nature and history with moments of thermal relaxation in the Litoral region, here are three unmissable options for planning an unforgettable getaway.

Getaway to Puerto Madryn (Chubut)

A date with whales and penguins

September is an excellent month for a couple of days' getaway to Puerto Madryn. It coincides with the peak of the southern right whale season and the beginning of the Magellanic penguins' arrival. In addition, the days start getting longer, with very pleasant maximum temperatures hovering around 16 degrees Celsius (60°F).

Whales are visible from the coast at El Doradillo or on an excursion to Puerto Pirámides. Penguins begin to populate local reserves and nearby areas like Punta Tombo. There are also sea lions and elephant seals.

The plan for the first day of the getaway begins with a trip from Puerto Madryn to Puerto Pirámides, on the Valdés Peninsula, to take a whale-watching boat excursion. In the afternoon, a tour of the Punta Norte Reserve or Caleta Valdés to observe elephant seals and sea lions.

The morning of the second day includes a visit to El Doradillo beach, where whales swim just a few meters from the shore. In the afternoon, a walk through downtown Puerto Madryn and a trip to Gaiman (a one-hour drive) to enjoy a traditional Welsh tea.

How to get to Puerto Madryn?

There are flights from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn Airport (PMY) or Trelew Airport (REL). The distance between Trelew and Puerto Madryn is 65 kilometers (40 miles).

Where to stay in Puerto Madryn?

The best areas to stay in Puerto Madryn are the downtown area, ideal for those traveling without a car and seeking proximity to restaurants and shops, and the Waterfront (Boulevard Almirante Brown), perfect for enjoying direct ocean views and greater tranquility.

What to eat in Puerto Madryn?

Prawns, fried calamari (rabas), pollack, octopus, and the classic Patagonian lamb. The traditional Welsh cake is a must-try.

What to keep in mind for a getaway to Puerto Madryn in September?

Bring a windbreaker, fleece, hat, and gloves. Comfortable footwear is also essential for walking along the coastal trails and nature reserves.

Getaway to Tafí del Valle (Tucumán)

An excursion to the Tucumán Yungas

The beginning of spring is an ideal time of year to visit destinations in the Argentine North, such as Tafí del Valle, because the climate is temperate during the day (although it cools down at night), the sky is usually clear, and there are fewer tourists than during the summer or winter holidays. It is a dry season, perfect for outdoor activities like trekking, horseback riding, and walks to the La Ciénega dam or the sierras.

Leaving San Miguel de Tucumán via Provincial Route 307, you pass through the Los Sosa Nature Reserve, a protected area that preserves the yungas in their purest state. The landscape changes drastically from a green, humid jungle to the aridity of the valley in just a couple of hours.

The "Yungas Circuit," very close to the provincial capital, is a half-day excursion. Going up Provincial Route 338, you will find trekking trails immersed in the jungle (like in the Loma Bola area) and incredible views from the Christ the Blessing Monument.

Other highlights in the area are Villa Nougués, a beautiful summer village with European style built amidst the green hills of the jungle, and the El Cadillal dam, where you can watch the sunset over the water surrounded by jungle-covered hills.

How to get to Tafí del Valle?

There are flights from Buenos Aires to the Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport (SMT), lasting about two hours. The car ride from there to the center of Tafí del Valle takes another two hours, via National Route 38 and the imposing and winding Provincial Route 307.

Where to stay in Tafí del Valle?

The best options are divided between the town center (ideal for those seeking proximity to restaurants and shops) and the rural areas on the outskirts (perfect for connecting with nature, enjoying panoramic views of the hills, and resting peacefully).

What to eat in Tafí del Valle?

Tucumán empanadas, filled with matambre or tender beef, green onions, and cumin. Humita and tamales prepared with fresh corn, pumpkin, and squash, masterfully wrapped in corn husks. Artisanal Tafí cheese, with an intense flavor. Locro and stews, ideal for combating the cool mountain climate.

What to keep in mind for a getaway to Tafí del Valle in September?

Bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves for the night. Sunglasses, a cap, and sunscreen for the day. Dress in layers, adaptable to the temperature changes between the shade and the sun. Drive the road through the Quebrada de los Sosa during the day, as it has many sharp curves.

Palmar de Colón and Hot Springs (Entre Ríos)

A perfect combination of nature and relaxation

The spring temperatures of September are perfect for a getaway to Entre Ríos that combines a tour of El Palmar National Park and its exuberant nature with the relaxation offered by the thermal complex in Colón.

On a two-day getaway, the first day can be dedicated to El Palmar National Park. It is best to leave early by car to the park (located on National Route 14, about 50 kilometers from Colón). After entering the park—over 8,000 hectares—via the dirt road, capybaras, foxes, and rheas appear, living among millions of palm trees.

After lunch at the park's restaurant or a picnic in the designated area facing the Uruguay River, you can take a walking tour along the short trails—like the Glorieta Trail—and a walk to the historic ruins of the Calera del Palmar. Then, return to Colón at sunset for dinner on the waterfront.

On the second day, a half-day to relax at the Colón thermal complex, a late lunch in the city center, and a tour of the waterfront, a visit to the port, and some shopping at the artisans' center before heading back.

What to eat in Colón?

Grilled or baked river fish. Artisanal and regional pastas, such as sorrentinos or ravioles stuffed with pacú (a local river fish) with citrus sauces. Pickled preserves, cheeses, artisanal cold cuts, products made with pecans and honey, plus the traditional yatay liqueur (the fruit of the local palm tree).

How to get to Colón?

The fastest and most direct option from Buenos Aires is by car or long-distance bus (a little over 300 kilometers via routes 9, 12, and 14), a route that includes crossing the Zárate-Brazo Largo Complex.

Where to stay in Colón?

The best options in September are staying near the waterfront—for walks along the Uruguay River—or near the thermal complex, for those prioritizing relaxation.

What to keep in mind for a getaway to Colón in September?

Wear layers, including warm clothing for the nights and light clothing for the sunny afternoons. An umbrella or a raincoat can come in handy, as there are usually a few rainy days in September.
