Experiences not to be missed during spring in Argentina

Jacarandas blossom and their violet-blue colours carpet the streets of Buenos Aires. Tulips of every hue lie at the foot of the Trevelin mountain. Whales and orcas visit Puerto Madryn; and much more!

The country with the light-blue and white flag becomes more special as the magical spring comes. The following note tells you about it.

Argentina is beautiful the whole year —we won’t be against this premise. Yet, it’s undeniable that it looks even more attractive as of the end of September. The sun comes out and gradually warms our hearts, flowers embellish every landscape, outdoor activities double down, coastlines become stunning with amazing views, and the calendar is packed with unique events. So, which are these experiences you mustn’t miss during the colourful season? Keep on reading to find out. Mind you, you’ll surely feel like travelling.

- Take pictures of the violet city as the Jacarandas blossom in Buenos Aires

Someone came up with the word “Instagrammable” inspired by pictures like these. Buenos Aires becomes tinged with violet; its streets get lined with trees full of flowers that perform a dance with the wind and provide shadow to those strolling; and petals paint the pavements. The violet hue of the Jacarandas takes over the Argentinian capital. During spring, especially in November and December, Buenos Aires becomes magical, a powerful magnet for the camera lenses looking forward to capturing it.

The magician to whom we owe this was the French landscapist Carlos Thays. He saw the potential of incorporating this tree into the Buenos Aires identity and made it come true by the end of the 19th century. Thanks to him, we can witness this outstanding beauty. More than 14,000 examples are spread out in the metropolis. Yet, Palermo, Belgrano and Recoleta are the neighbourhoods in the lead. If you’re looking for a great picture, Avenida del Libertador and Figueroa Alcorta avenues won’t let you down.

- Walk through the paradise of tulips in Trevelin, Chubut

Some artist from the sky gifted us with this portrait: a blue sky, mountains with snow peaks, green shapes, and an endless tulip field with bright hues of pink, violet, red, yellow, and white. The Patagonian compass shows a blast of colour in October: a rainbow in the most southern lands in the world.

This attraction is located on the 259 route, 13 kilometres away from the Trevelin centre (in the Nant and Fall Protected Natural Area), and is open for a month as of the beginning of October. Two million flowers queue on the field at the foot of the famous Gorsedd and Cwmwl snow peaks, “Cloud Throne” in Welsh. A tip: besides the colourful selfie, you can also take pictures at night. The moon, the stars, the shape of the impressive mountains, and thousands of tulips are altogether a great combination, aren’t they?

- Watch orcas, whales, and Patagonian dolphins in Puerto Madryn, Chubut

There’s no other place on earth to get close to the most wonderful marine wildlife like the Chubut coastlines. And spring is for sure the best season to do it. Why? Because animal visits are considerably more frequent, and you can see more species on the same trip. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the September guest list includes from southern right whales to penguins and orcas.

The first ones go to Golfo Nuevo every year, and they won’t disappoint you. They play along the waves, and they can be seen even from the city coastline. Another key area to watch them is El Doradillo. If you want a more immersive experience, you can get in their natural habitat, the water, and take a closer look at them. Their massive sizes (they can be up to 16 metres high) amaze even the most adventurous traveller.

Also, the cute birds in their black and white suits settle in Península Valdés, the biggest Magellanic penguin colony, and Punta Tombo. Punta Norte and Caleta Valdés are great areas to watch orcas. Yet, you should be ready to get surprised because they can turn up in any area of the peninsula. Elephant seals and sea lions complete the list, together with hundreds of bird species that could be considered regular visitors of those areas.

- Stroll around the rose garden in Buenos Aires

This garden gem is located at the most important park of the city, Tres de Febrero or better known as Los Bosques de Palermo. Thanks to its beauty, it has gained the position of the main tourist attraction of this big green space. We’re talking about the Palermo rose garden or Rosedal de Palermo, home to 8,000 examples of 93 different rose species that turn the urban scenery red, pink, white, and green.

Apart from its flowery feature, the rose garden has the famous Greek-influence bridge above the lake. This combination creates a space where peace and aesthetic charm will surround every moment of your stroll. If you haven’t been persuaded yet, let’s add some data. This garden has been granted the Garden Excellence Award by the WFRS.

- Kayak in the lakes of Bariloche

The formula for success: mountains, lakes, forests, and sun. Have you pictured a portrait? Well done. Bariloche is the closest place to paradise, and there are endless ways to enjoy it. Even though each season woos travellers differently, spring competes for the first place. To this already captivating picture, spring adds flowers, such as lupins and cherry trees; the landscape becomes even more beautiful (if that’s even possible); the weather is ideal for outdoor activities, for which this destination is perfect; and you can enjoy not only its land, but also one of its major setting: the water.

We’ll build on this last point. Temperature as of September 21st allows one of the must-do activities in Patagonia: kayaking. Row at your own pace across the water mirrors. Stare at the snow peaks of the Andes reflected on the water. Listen to the sounds of nature. Observe the show from the inside. Discover hidden beaches. Connect with the environment. It sounds good, doesn’t it?

Bariloche has innumerable places to practice it because the charm of its lakes is one of its outstanding features. The best of all is that you don’t need any experience to try kayaking. If you already feel tempted (we bet you do), write down these coordinates to get splashed by crystal-clear waters and immersed by the magic Patagonian vastness: Nahuel Huapi and Brazo Tristeza, Guitérrez lake, Moreno lake, and Mascardi lake.

- Top off adventure tourism with a glass of red wine in Mendoza

Mendoza is not only a luxurious destination, but also a place that encourages movement. You can show off your best outfit in the vineyards and get your trainers dirty at the same time. The best time for this union between pleasure and adrenaline is… Yes, you’ve guessed: spring. Why? Because the weather is ideal for enjoying the mountainous landscapes and indulging yourself in a good glass of wine.

The magnificent Atuel Canyon combines turquoise waters and red-coloured lands, and it invites adventurers to practice rafting and zip lining. The dunes in Nihuil are perfect for sandboarding. The Potrerillos area, an adventure tourism Mecca, offers activities like kayaking, rafting, zip lining, trekking, and horseback riding. The list goes on and on, and it’s clear that all tourists must enjoy nature in the land of Mendoza. Winter fades to make way to a universe of activities under the sun. There’s no better reward for exercising than indulging in gourmet flavours paired with some of the best wines in the world.
