Geographic location: Northwest Argentina.
How to get here: by plane to Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport, from Buenos Aires and other domestic and international airports. By land (car) from anywhere in the country through any of the various national or provincial routes. By public transportation, through any of the bus lines arriving in the city of Salta and connecting with other places in the province.
Area: 155,488 km2
Altitude: 1,246 meters above sea level (average altitude) and 6,739 meters above sea level (maximum altitude at the Llullaillaco volcano).
Climate: it varies in the different areas. In the East, in the Yungas (forest) area, the subtropical climate with dry season (winter) prevails: a warm climate with relatively marked changes according to the variations of the soil. In the center, the predominant North-to-South orientation of the valleys influences the rainfall distribution; here, the semi-arid climate with dry season prevails. The rain season is December through March. In the West, in the Puna region, there are sudden temperature oscillations and scarce rainfall, which is characteristic of the dry climate of the Andes.
Ideal time of the year: April through November, dry season.
Recommended length of stay: 5 to 8 days.
Recommended clothing: in winter, take warm clothes. In summer, a light jacket to wear at night will be enough. Also, take comfortable preferably light-colored clothes, repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and appropriate footwear according to the activity.
What to do: Visit the Museum of High Altitude Archeology (MAAM), the Cabra Corral Dam Los Cardones National Park, Cuesta del Obispo, Cachi, San Antonio de Los Cobres, the Calchaquíes Valleys. You can also take a ride in the Train to the Clouds; go rafting; zip lining, mountaineering, trekking and mountain biking.
Tips: Renew your energies by trying the delicious local food: empanadas, humitas, tamales, locro, asado and wines (especially the famous white Torrontes wine).
