Train to the Clouds

The train moves forward along Valle de Lerma, delves into Quebrada del Toro and travels the immense Puna from above. First stop: La Polvorilla viaduct, with breath-taking views. Second stop: San Antonio de los Cobres, a town full of tradition. And when the ride ends, you step out of the train, feel the clean, cold air on your face, walk slowly to get used to the height. And take a few pictures to bear witness that you have arrived at the clouds.
Geographic location: Province of Salta, northwest region of Argentina.
How to get there: The circuit starts in the city of Salta, the capital of its namesake province. The city has an international airport.
Altitude: At the beginning (city of Salta), 1,187 meters above sea level. At the end (La Polvorilla Viaduct), 4,220 meters above sea level.
Ideal time of the year: From April to November (the train does not run in the summer, from December to March, as it is the rainy season).
Recommended length of stay: 1 to 2 days.
Climate: Salta has a warm climate, which changes along the journey due to its relief.
What to do: Enjoy the train’s circuit for 217 km at a speed of 35 km/h. You leave from Salta early in the morning, and come back by bus around 9 p.m. You’ll travel across the Quebrada del Toro gully, with a stop at the beautiful town of Santa Rosa de Tastil to visit Museo de Sitio.
The train has a dining car, medical office, audio, video, and a bilingual guide service.
Recommended clothing: Warm clothes, due to the temperature range.
Tips: It is advisable to book the tickets in advance, as they are in high demand. It’s recommended to have a light dinner the night before, and make sure you rest properly before the trip so that you can enjoy this experience.
