Visit the Grande lagoon and the caldera of the Galán volcano. Explore the Hombre Muerto salt field and the Antofalla, Antofagasta, Alumbrera, and Carachi Pampa volcanoes. How to get there: Antofagasta de la Sierra is 550 km north of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, the provincial capital. You can get there via Ruta Provincial 43.

Climate: Cold and dry, with extreme temperatures and a large temperature range.

Recommended length of stay: 2 to 3 days.
