In the 50s, the first ski resort in Argentina was inaugurated at 11 miles from San Carlos de Bariloche, in the province of Río Negro. Since then, “Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia” is acknowledged as the most important ski resort in South America provided it has the most diversified service infrastructure, the largest slope surface and a quantity of transportation means that vastly outnumbers those at the other winter centers in the country. The season starts in June and it is extended till October, in the middle of spring. This winter center offers countless proposals from children and teenagers, for trained sportsmen and for those that only want to have fun in the snow. Its 38 elevation means permit transporting about 35,000 skiers per hour. Its 60 slopes with different difficulty levels are ideal for cross country ski, Alpine ski and snowboard. Catedral has more than 300 qualified and internationally acknowledged instructors, which is an excellent opportunity for those willing to take lessons of this exciting sport. Besides, it offers “Snow Tours” to learn about the mountain and winter sports, snowmobile, 4-wheelers, sledding and snow tubing. For those willing to stay close to the mount, there is an interesting accommodation offer at 3, 4 and 5 stars hotels, which totalize about 5,000 beds. Gastronomy is present at every time of the day, with cozy places for breakfast and tea time, exquisite chocolate and gourmet proposals for lunch and dinner. The strategic placement of Cerro Catedral, in the vicinity of San Carlos de Bariloche, expands entertainment and recreational activities for the whole family. Bariloche is an emblematic city in the region and one of the obliged destinations for those coming to the Andean Patagonia. From this epicenter, there are different types of tours and activities available. Circuito Chico is one of the most traditional tours: it goes around the entire coast of the Nahuel Huapi Lake; it includes the access to Campanario mount, accessible with chair lift, and at which top the best views of the lake and the mountain surrounding the city can be obtained, together with the chance of taking unique panoramic photos. The tour continues to Colonia Suiza, López Mount and Otto Mount, at the top of which it is the mythical revolving coffeehouse. Circuito Grande (=Big Circuit), as its name indicates, covers a more extended circuit that includes the Nahuel Huapi National Park and, if weather conditions permit it, it reaches Villa La Angostura and Villa Traful, both in the province of Neuquén. Bariloche has an excellent accessibility: daily flights from/to Buenos Aires and, in winter season, from Brazil too.
