It is the third largest province in the country, after Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz.

It has an uneven coast born from plains that end in abrupt cliffs exposed to the sea. The Valdés Peninsula and the San Jorge Gulf are among the most important coastal accidents.

The steppe covers the whole area of the central plateau. Towards the Andean Range, there is a dense rainforest that features conifers and fagaceas such as cohiues, notros, lengas, Antarctic Beeches and different autochthonous fruits like the calafate. The most common species are the apple tree, the blackberry bush, the raspberries, the blueberries, among others.

In this region, enthusiasts can practice adventure tourism, fishing, skiing, trekking, as well as admire whales, killer whales, birds, sea lions and elephant seals while tasting the traditional food influenced by the Welsh immigrants who settled in its coasts, in the 19^th Century.

There are many natural reserves along the Patagonian coast where different marine species are protected, but none of them has such an incredible concentration of animals as the Valdés Peninsula. The southern right whales arrive at the Nuevo and San José Gulfs to give birth to their calves. There are several tours to Puerto Pirámides to see this natural show.

Another important attraction is the Sarmiento Petrified Woods. It is a geological reservation of fossil woods dating back 65 million years.

One of the most important tourist attractions of the province, and the country, is the Perito Moreno Glacier, located within Los Glaciares National Park, with 12 other glaciers. The Perito Moreno is 5 km (3 mi) long and 69 meters high above the Argentino Lake level. It can be accessed from the city of El Calafate. Throughout the year, the constant ice falls dazzle the tourists. In the Argentino Lake, you can also appreciate the Upsala Glacier, which is 50 km (31 mi) long, and the Onelli and Agassiz Glaciers, which can be seen after a one and a half kilometer walk from the Onelli bay.

Another unique attraction is the Petrified Woods Natural Monument. 130 millions of years ago, the region was covered by huge forests. The volcanic eruptions and the Andes uplifting buried it. There has been a fossilization process of trees and, due to the wind and rain, a stone forest has been discovered. It features 35 meters long and three meters diameter specimens.

For those who want to experience the traces of the Patagonian tribes, in the amazing valley of Alto Río Pintura, there are cave paintings that describe hunting scenes and hand printings that date back to 9,300 years.

Other tours such as the hike to the Roca Lake, allow you to watch eagles, caranchos and condors. There is also trekking at the national park and walks along the surroundings of Del Desierto Lake. It is possible for you to enjoy balloon trips, horse rides, trout and salmon fishing, bike rides and more.

El Calafate offers a vast variety of services, hotels and restaurant options, as well as visits to some of the estancias near the glacier where you can watch cattle herding and sheep shearing shows. El Chaltén village is a key spot for those who want to climb the Fitz Roy or El Torre hills.

The province is made up of the eastern area of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados. The island limits with the Strait of Magellan to the north, which is the communication route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Beagle Channel to the south. The provincial boundaries reach the Argentine Antarctica and the islands of the South Atlantic, between the Meridian 25° West and 74° West, and the Parallel 50° South, and a great part of the provincial territory is formed by Atlantic waters.

The province can be accessed through its two international airports.
